Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

On the nose, there is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM HARVEST NOTES: Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.

A good wine. On the nose, bthere is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM NOTES: It was very cold from April to September which dashed hopes for good ripeness. The deluge in late September (100 mm in 8 days) was very worrying, but things changed all of a sudden. The rain stopped and it was finally warm. There were two fine passes from the 3rd to the 12th of October and a third from the 16th to the 20th, however it was difficult to find grapes with high enough sugar levels.

An excellent fortified wine produced in limited quantities, it needs a few years to take shape and reach the height of its elegance. It has a nose of citrus fruits and toasted elements. On the palate, intense creaminess takes over. It has excellent ageing properties.

The Cyprès de Climens is the second label wine of Chateau Climens.

The wines are made primarily from the Sémillon grape, with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle sometimes playing supporting roles. The beauty and depth of the wines depends on the unique fall weather conditions in this part of Bordeaux — especially the early morning mists that rise from the nearby rivers — that allow the development of Botrytis cinerea, commonly known as noble rot, on the grapes. The vintage commenced early for d'Yquem, beginning on September 29th and finishing on November 18th. The 1983 is enormous, with huge, honeyed, pineapple, coconut, and caramel flavors, massive extract, and an unctuous quality barely framed by acidity and new oak.
